History of the Office of Commercialisation (OoC)

In 2000, Professor Carol Pollock, Professor of Medicine at Royal North Shore Hospital in St Leonards, NSW, Australia was entrepreneurial in starting up an intellectual property management agency which would be responsible for managing the intellectual property assets of the NSW Department of Health.

These assets are generated by the Department of Health's Area Health Services which are business units set up to administer the research hospitals within specified geographical areas. In 2001, Professor Pollock approached the NSW Minister for Health, The Hon. Craig Knowles for his advice and assistance and as a result he gave financial support to her entrepreneurial efforts.

Since the concept was piloted at the Royal North Shore Hospital in St Leonards on Sydney's North Shore, the agency appropriately took the name, BioMed North Limited ( www.BioMedNorth.org ).

BioMed North Limited has earned a list of impressive credentials which are listed in this website under IP Commercialisation Deals and Performance, and also on the BioMed North website. Significantly, today, BioMed North is the only IP management agency in Australia that specialises in intellectual property management  including commercialisation, for research hospitals. BioMed North carries out its work through Offices of Commercialisation located within hospitals owned by NSW Area Health Services.
